Global news – French Team Dissemination – Breaking the NEET Circle

1. How has your perspective on young people in NEET situations changed as a result of participating in this training course?

I realized that the NEET situation is more common that I would have expected. It helped me gain perspective on the causes of this issue and understand how to help young people by providing tools in order to get themselves out of their NEET situation.  I now feel that I will understand this issue better when confronted to it in my work and volunteering activities, thanks to the different workshops and approaches provided by the trainer. Additionally, it helped me see further the stigma and cliches that come with this topic by gaining more knowledge on the topic.

2. What were the most valuable takeaways from the course for you personally?

As someone who is currently thinking about the direction which my career should take this course was really helpful both as a way to understand which are pathways that could lead me to get a stable and solid job but also as a way to provide me with additional competences that I can now make us of. It made me understand better why some of my family members are in the NEET situation themselves and why they struggle to get out of it. I also now understand better how the stigma has on affect on their self esteem. By debating with the other participants on the issue, I was able to put my ideas together and get a more solid and concrete opinion on the issue. I feel that I’m more able after this TC to get in touch with people in situation of NEET.

3. In your opinion, what are some effective methods to engage young NEETs and prevent other young people from falling into NEET situations?

I believe that NEET situations are often encouraged by the school system. Indeed, from my experience this system rewards students from stable life situations and gets in the way of students who might face some difficulties in their living conditions. Providing a better support for all students could help soften this difference, even though it wouldn’t solve the issue entirely. It is also important to make tools such as therapy more accessible and to destigmatize as I believe it to be such a powerful tool for self empowerment. Through therapy, one can have a deeper understand of their self and thus learn how to better cope in situations that could get in the way of their growth as an individual.
